Tips to Keep Teens Safe on the Road

Posted on: April 27, 2016 by Signature Insurance Group

As any new driver knows, it takes a bit of practice to get comfortable behind the wheel. Factor in an abundance of distractions and common hazards, safe driving can be a challenge. Therefore, we have devised a simple checklist of things that will keep teen drivers safe on the road. Even more importantly, however, is making sure your teen is protected with the best SoCal Car Insurance available. Before they set out in the car, make sure to share the following tips with them.

    Minimize Distractions

From texting and phone calls to friends in the car, there’s no shortage of distractions for any driver. However, learning to minimize these can reduce the risk of getting into an accident significantly. So, put the phone down, keep your eyes on the road, and watch for potential safety issues including aggressive drivers, inclement weather, road blocks, traffic, and more.

    Back to Basics

The obvious rules apply, as well. Always wear your seat-belt, use your turn signals, never tailgate, and obey speed limits. It’s important to adjust the head rest to be perfectly poised behind your head to support it in case of an accident. Next, become familiar with your car. Knowing the limits of your vehicle can maximize your safety potential. Lastly, practice constant awareness. Is your gas tank running low? Is there anywhere close to fill up? Are you driving in the country where animals are likely to jump out in front of you? Are you being cautious when proceeding into an intersection? These are questions you can remember to ask yourself when getting familiar with driving.

    If you’re in an accident…

Pull over to the side of the road, if possible, and assess the damage. If there are any injuries, call 911 immediately. According to Teen Driving, you should get information from the other driver(s), including their name, address, phone number, license plate, and their insurance carrier. Lastly, take pictures of the accident with your phone and contact your insurance carrier.
