Summer Motorcycle Touring Safety
Posted on: August 30, 2016 by Signature Insurance Group
Few things are more exhilarating than riding a motorcycle cross country or up the California Coast. However, as temperatures are known to reach all-time highs during August and September, there are some added safety precautions that riders must take to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heat-related illnesses. So, before venturing out for your long-awaited road trip, consider the following safety advice. More importantly, however, is protecting yourself and your bike with a customized Orange County Motorcycle Insurance policy.
Watch for early signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Your body will send you signals that it’s having trouble with the heat, which can include cramps, nausea, headaches, extreme fatigue, flushed or pale skin, dizziness, and heavy sweating. Left unchecked, you can develop heat exhaustion, which is a form of mild shock, says The Lost Adventure. If you feel any of these symptoms, immediately pull over in a rest stop, get water and relax in the shade.
Drink more than enough water.
Even if you aren’t thirsty, your body requires way more water than usual in hot temperatures to remain cool. Bear in mind that your body is prone to crashing if you don’t stay hydrated- plus, water gives your organs and tissues the cushion you need and lubricates your joints.
Wear the right gear.
Even though it may seem counterproductive to cover your skin during a hot day, it’s actually more beneficial to your body. Abrasion resistant gear is a must and will also keep you from getting sunburned, as well.
Make frequent stops.
Plan to stop relatively frequently to allow your body to cool off. Drink plenty of water and relax inside or in the shade to allow yourself to get comfortable and ready for the drive ahead. Don’t force yourself to keep going if you don’t feel up to it- this will only expedite the process of heat exhaustion!
