Spring Home Maintenance Tips
Posted on: April 15, 2016 by Signature Insurance Group

Spring is finally upon us which means one thing: so are April showers. While the harsh effects of winter can leave your home looking drab, there are some routine spring maintenance tasks that should be completed before the rains set in. This way, your home will be restored to its original glory and be ready for the season. In addition to following these maintenance tips, ensure your home is protected with a sound Orange County Homeowners Insurance policy.
Inspect the roof.
The last thing you want is rain seeping through your roof and into your home. If any shingles were lost or blown away during the winter, be sure to get them replaced immediately. Get a quality roofer to replace the damage or install a new one, if necessary.
Clean the gutters.
Built up debris such as water, mud, sticks, and leaves can block the flow of the gutters, so clean them out periodically. Be sure the spout points away from the foundation of the home to ensure proper drainage.
Protect your foundation.
To prevent water from pooling in the low areas of your yard and seeping into your foundation, use compacted soil. This will fill any gaps and protect your foundation from heavy rains.
Check the chimney.
Clean out the flue to get rid of any excess debris and have a chimney inspector sweep it out annually.
Fix the concrete.
According to HGTV, all exterior slabs except pool decks should drain away from the home’s foundation, so fill cracks with a concrete crack filler or silicone caulk; when weather permits, power-wash and then seal the concrete.
