Protecting your Home During Summer Vacation

Posted on: June 28, 2016 by Signature Insurance Group

With summer in full swing, you’re likely to join the millions of Americans vacationing this season. While this is arguably the worst time for something to go wrong in your home, Murphy’s law often means that it will. So, instead of worrying about a potential break in or mishap at home while you’re enjoying your vacation, heed the following advice. More importantly, however, is ensuring your assets are protected with a custom-tailored Orange County Homeowners Insurance policy.

Ask a friend to keep an eye out.

Whether it’s a trusted friend or neighbor, you should ask someone to come by your house periodically and check on it, bring in the mail, pick up any packages, and make sure there hasn’t been any burglary. Another great way to deter potential thieves is to ask your neighbor to park in your driveway while you’re away. This will give the illusion that someone is home and prevent would-be burglars from attempting to enter your home.

    Trick thieves.

In addition to having someone park in your driveway, get rid of your spare key. The last thing you want when you’re on vacation is for a burglar to find your “secret” hiding spot and to get easy access to your home. Next, consider putting lights on a sporadic timer to make the home look lived in. Furthermore, you might want to have your mail held at the post office if you plan on being gone for an extended period of time.

    Pull the plug.

To be safe, unplug electronics while you’re away. This includes your TV, computer, and kitchen appliances. Not only does this save money, but it will protect them from a power surge. In fact, according to the Consumer Energy Center, many appliances use power even when they’re turned off.
