    Home Project Prioritization Tips

Posted on: March 28, 2017 by Signature Insurance Group

In our last post, we explored how to determine how much house you can really afford. Based on your lifestyle, monthly income, and future plans, budgeting for a home is a big decision. However, now that you’ve decided how much you can afford, you might be looking to cut corners and save money wherever possible. If you choose a home that needs a few projects, fear not. This simple task list will help you prioritize any project you need completed. As you read on, ensure your OC Home Insurance policy is in effect and get started on your projects.

    Declutter.

Once you’ve moved in and gotten settled, it’s time to declutter all the boxes. Getting rid of all the extra stuff you have in your home can help you visualize what needs to get done. If you don’t need certain items anymore, consider selling them to get some extra cash for your improvement projects.

    Safety first.

Make a list of all of the projects you’d like to complete. From complete overhauls to cosmetic fixes, write everything down. Next, prioritize the projects based on safety. For example, if you have pets and kids, consider fixing that backyard fence first or baby-proofing the sharp corners of your home before working on the landscaping. Further, make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working and supplied with fresh batteries. Clean out the lint from your dryer exhaust duct to prevent a fire. Fix all locks, door knobs and windows to make sure they close and lock securely. Once safety projects are checked off your list, you can move on to the fun stuff, explains She Knows.

    Budget.

As our last article stressed, budget is a major and realistic factor to consider when prioritizing projects. Consider doing DIY projects to cut down the costs, and keep track of all the material and labor costs before agreeing to start anything. Next, consider which small and inexpensive upgrades can be done without breaking the bank, such as new paint, light fixtures, and window trimmings.
