First-Time Manager Mistakes
Posted on: May 10, 2016 by Signature Insurance Group

Adapting to a managerial role is no easy task. However, once these first-time managers are promoted, there is going to be a learning curve. With that said, there are some common mistakes made by new managers to be aware of. While these are bound to happen, it’s important to adopt the mentality of supporting a team rather than being in charge of everything yourself. However, with time, practice, and the right Orange County Management Liability Insurance, new managers of any industry are bound to be successful while limiting their liability. Read on to become familiar with the most common mistakes new managers make and how to avoid them.
#1: Doing everything yourself.
As an employee, you were responsible for your own set of tasks. However, as a manager, it is your job to lead your team to complete all of the day’s tasks. It’s impossible to track every step of progress on every project- so don’t overwhelm yourself. Instead, ensure your team has the resources, training and assistance they need to be successful.
#2: Micromanaging your team.
Start to focus on the big picture and let your team focus on the details. Oversee their progress and encourage them, but do not micromanage!
#3: Not establishing your goals early on.
As the manager, you’re responsible for the processes and procedures at your workplace. Don’t be afraid to nix an ineffective process or add a recurring meeting to make sure everyone is on the same page. Remember, you don’t have to overhaul a complete department to demonstrate your dedication to the company.
#4: Not making important decisions.
According to Forbes, without any prior management experience, new managers can experience something called decision paralysis- it’s when an individual overthinks a situation to the point that he or she never actually makes a decision. If you don’t make a decision, no one will. Remember that your team counts on you, so if you aren’t sure where to turn, ask for feedback from a superior or a colleague.
